Hello Tumblr! Long time no see! :)
I was “Astrid the Possum Savior” for Halloween.
Phil and I went to a national park last weekend and this was in the visitor center. This guy makes Maypop look like a little chunkmonster! :P
Let’s all take a minute to admire this fascinating creature known as the Virginia opossum (Didelphis Virginiana).
The Virginia opossum is well-known as a pest, but it is actually quite the opposite. Non-territorial and non-destructive, it migrates to wherever food is available.
This animals has quite a few shocking natural abilities, and sadly, most of them go ignored.
1. Playing possum - When this animals is threatened, it may fall over on the ground and play dead. It also emits an odor that makes predators believe that it is, in fact, deceased. The fainting that occurs is completely involuntary.
2. Lethal toxin neutralizing factor protein - Over the course of its evolution, the Virginia opossum has developed a protein that seeks out and destroys biotoxins in its bloodstream. What does this mean? This little tank is immune to snake venom, bee venom, botulism, ricin and several other toxic substances.
3. Resistance to rabies - Due to their low body temperature, this animal is nearly immune to rabies. Only about one in eight hundred opossums are infected with the virus.
Needless to say, this is my absolute favorite animal. They don’t get near as much appreciation as they should, and it makes me sad.
Great post! :)
